Description

Deliciously crispy onion rings filled with mozzarella cheese and coated with a flavorful breadcrumb mixture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large onions, sliced into thick rings
  • 200g mozzarella cheese, cut into thin strips (to fit between onion rings)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons mixed dried herbs (e.g., oregano, basil, thyme)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion Rings: Separate onion slices into individual rings. Place mozzarella strips between pairs of onion rings, forming a kind of onion-cheese sandwich.
  2. Prepare Breading Stations: In the first bowl, mix flour, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. In the second bowl, beat eggs with milk. In the third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, and mixed herbs.
  3. Coat the Onion Rings: Coat each onion ring sandwich in the flour mixture, then dip it in the egg wash, making sure it is fully covered. Press it into the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring an even coating. Repeat with all onion rings.
  4. Refrigerate: Place the breaded onion rings on a tray and refrigerate for 30 minutes. This helps the breading adhere better during frying.
  5. Fry the Onion Rings: Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent the onion rings from becoming greasy.
  • For an extra crispy texture, double-coat the onion rings by repeating the breading process.
  • Experiment with different cheese types for varied flavors. Cheddar or gouda can be excellent alternatives.
  • Serve with a spicy dipping sauce for an extra kick.
